About the Karpinsky Institute
The All-Russian Geological research institute of A. P. Karpinsky the leading subordinate institution of the Federal Agency for Mineral Use (Rosnedra) in the field of regional geological study of mineral resources.
The main directions of the Institute's work:
Provision and performance of works on state geological mapping of the territory of the Russian Federation and its adjacent water areas
Creation of a state network of reference geological and geophysical profiles, parametric and ultra-deep wells
Scientific and technical support of geological and exploration works, scientific, thematic and experimental-methodological works
The Institute was founded in 1882 in St. Petersburg by order of Emperor Alexander III for the systematic study of the geological structure of Russia and its mineral resources and is named after Alexander Petrovich Karpinsky - an outstanding scientist, the first president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who headed the institution for many years.
For more than a century of history, a considerable amount of mineral research has been carried out, modern scientific methods and approaches in the field of geological sciences have been introduced. In different years, the team employed outstanding researchers who made a significant contribution to the development of domestic and world geology.
Scientifically substantiated forecasts were prepared for more than 600 fields on different continents. 48 employees were awarded the honorary sign “Field Discoverer”. Work on creating geological maps at various scales continues; more than 60 field expeditions are organized annually throughout Russia, from Chukotka to the Crimea.

The Institute has 3 academicians, 2 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 26 doctors of sciences and 139 candidates of sciences. Much attention is paid to the training of young specialists and training of postgraduate students in priority scientific directions.
Active cooperation with geological services of other countries and participation in international projects is carried out.
